Gabriela Loza is a Mexican-American award winning filmmaker originally from Southern California. She started in Hollywood as a set painter/carpenter and prop fabricator and moved into production design. Gabriela has lived in Australia and now New Zealand for the last 14 years where she attended and graduated from International Film School Sydney.
ERASED (short 2021) is Gabriela's first film as writer/director. Erased premiered at Celludroid in South Africa, where it won ‘Best Live Action Short Film’. In August 2022, Erased won 'Best Australian Short Film' at the Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival. To date, Erased has screened at 20 international film festivals and garnered 14 awards and 10 nominations.
Gabriela was recently awarded 'Rising Star - First Time Filmmaker' at Sci-On Film Festival 2022 in Reno Nevada, USA. She was also awarded 'Best Set Design - Short' at the Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival 2022, Miami, Florida, USA. where she received a nomination for 'Best Director – Short'.
Gabriela is currently finishing ‘Tattooed' which is in post-production. Tattooed is Gabriela’s second short film as writer/director. 'Poppy Has Narcolepsy', her third short film, is also in post-production.
As a queer woman of colour, Gabriela is interested in using her filmmaking to discover and tell unheard stories and amplify Indigenous voices.
